This is my favorite training ride for building climbing strength. Near Sacramento, the ride traverses beautiful and remote areas and is hard (102 miles, 12,110 feet). It offers excellent training for such rides as the Markleeville Death Ride, the Terrible Two Double Century, and Climb To Kaiser.
There are two shorter and much easier variations of the ride for those preferring less and easier climbing.
Sierra Nevada foothills in the heart of historic gold rush country.
Shingle Springs Park-N-Ride.
Drive east on Highway 50 from Sacramento to the Shingle Springs exit. At the stop sign, make a right turn onto South Shingle Road, an immediate right turn onto Durock Road, then another right turn into the Park-N-Ride lot.
Climbing: 12,110 feet. Grades up to 18%.
Difficulty: Severe.
Maximum elevation: 3,000 feet.
I recommend this ride only for strong and experienced riders, although the course permits several bailout options. Bring adequate food (one section has no access to food for 39 miles) and fluids (it can be very hot in late spring and summer).
This ride has seven climbing challenges: Weber Creek, Prospectors Road, Cold Springs Road, Snow's Road, Mosquito Road, Hwy 193-Shoo Fly Roads, and Hwy 193-Chili Bar to Placerville.
Climbing: 43 Mile Ride: 3,565 feet.
64 Mile Ride: 5,515 feet.
Difficulty: Moderate.
Maximum elevation: 2,000 feet.
Moderately fit riders should be able to complete one of these options. At 29 miles, riders can choose between the 43 and 64 mile options. There are no severely steep sections.
