Immediately upon leaving Mile 13.5 on the American River Bike Trail you will cross the American River (photo below).

Take the time to appreciate this lovely spot.  In the fall Salmon can be seen migrating under the bridge headed for the Nimbus Fish Hatchery.

After crossing the Hazel Avenue Bridge, you will approach Nimbus Dam.  The photo below, taken approaching this dam, is a nice example of the visual treats which may pleasantly surprise you on the Bike Trail.

Biking the north side of Natomas Lake (photo below) usually is a fun journey.

After passing Lake Natoma, you will make a right turn onto the historic Folsom Truss Bridge (photos below).

Climb up the hill , turn left on Scott Street, and make the short but somewhat steep climb up to Sutter Street (photo below), which has functioned as Folsom's main street since the mid 1800's.

After cruising the length of this historic but short street, navigate down to the bike trail on the south side of Lake Natoma.

Compared to the American River Bike Trail on the north side of the lake, this southern trail has many more twists and turns, the path is more woodsy, and the trail itself is narrower and generally is covered with more debris.

I find that views of Lake Natoma (photos below) look freshly different from this southern perspective, which I haven't traveled much compared to the northern route.

As you proceed west, Nimbus Dam again becomes visible in the distance (photo below).

Before long you will return to Nimbus Dam, which looks quite different from the south than from the north side (photo below).

As you cruise back to Mile 13.5 and ride's end, note the many reminders of past gold mining, as evidenced by piles of dredged rocks (photo below).
